Alexander Tsybulsky, Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region, and Sergey Rodnev, regional transport minister, visited the refurbishment site of Talagi Airport. The Governor was hopeful that the site would open earlier than planned, saying that he was pleased with the progress on the refurbishment project being implemented by MSU-1 GC: “The result is already visible. We hope that the airport will open ahead of schedule. Everything needs to be ready before the opening, not only the construction of the new runway but also the terminal upgrades.

The airport is expected to welcome passengers in December. In addition to the runway, the airport terminal will be also renovated: passengers will be able to see the airfield. The terminal design will feature links between Arkhangelsk and the writer Fyodor Abramov, after whom the airport is named.

According to Sergey Rodnev, Minister of Transport of the Arkhangelsk Region, four main sections out of six are ready so far. More than 300 construction workers are working on the site, and more than 100 pieces of equipment are in operation. Despite the unpredictable northern weather, concrete casting work will be completed by the end of August instead of September.

According to Kirill Glagolev, the project director at MSU-1 GC, by keeping ahead of schedule, the team has spare time for any unplanned work: “We have 17 days in reserve to do all sorts of contingencies. Hopefully, there won’t be any, but there should be time to spare.

After the cement concrete casting is completed, construction workers will begin installing light signalling equipment and utility networks

The deadline for the project to upgrade the Arkhangelsk airport infrastructure is August 2024. The runway was last refurbished 40 years ago, in 1983.

The new runway will enhance flight safety and enable medium-haul aircraft to arrive to the airport at any time, without limiting the maximum take-off weight.
