The Russian Main Department of State Expertise (Glavgosexpertiza) has greenlit the phase 1 retrofit design for navigation locks Nos. 15 and 16 at the Gorodetsky complex of hydraulic structures on the Volga River north of Nizhny Novgorod, including the construction of an additional lock chamber, according to the state register on the agency’s website.
According to the press service of the Directorate for the Implementation of Transport Infrastructure Complex Development Projects (Rostransmodernizatsiya), the retrofit of the navigation locks will guarantee a depth of 4 m, supporting navigation between Nizhny Novgorod and Gorodets; increase the river section’s throughput capacity from 12 million to 32 million tonnes of cargo per annum; and enable international navigation within the Unified Deep Water System of European Russia.
According to Rostransmodernizatsiya, the project scope for the Gorodetsky complex of hydraulic structures includes retrofitting navigation locks Nos. 15 and 16, with construction of the second lock chamber No. 15a in the lower pound, and large-scale dredging of the 40.5-km section in the shipping channel to a design depth of 4.5 m.
