The runway at Talagi Airport in Arkhangelsk, refurbished by MSU-1 GC as the general contractor, is 50% complete. Fyodor Govorov, Chief Construction Supervision Specialist at the Directorate for the Implementation of Transport Infrastructure Complex Development Projects (Rostransmodernizatsiya), updated correspondents from Vesti, a current affairs programme on Rossiya 1, about the project: “About 50% of the high-quality concrete has already been laid. We are positive about the project’s progress; of course, we do find the odd minor flaw during inspections and notify the contractor about the deficiencies, but the company promptly corrects them.

Kirill Glagolev, project director at MSU-1 GC, spoke about the project specifics: “The concrete topping is cut into 7.5 x 7.5-m slabs, which are separate of each other. This is standard for all projects – experience informs this method, and we apply it across all regions.

In two weeks, the next stage will begin, involving laying the finish topping and painting the first runway markings. Plans also include starting the construction of taxiways by the end of July and then installing water drains and light signalling equipment.

According to Sergey Rodnev, Minister of Transport of the Arkhangelsk Region, the project is ahead of schedule: “As to the timelines, the project will be delivered as per the contract. The contractor has walked the talk. Some works have even been completed ahead of schedule. We hope that they remain ahead of schedule, so we can better prepare for the airport opening.

The airport is expected to welcome the first airplane to its new runway in December this year. Then the refurbishment project will move to phase 2, involving the construction of wastewater treatment facilities and the emergency services building. The final project deadline is 2024.

The new runway will enhance flight safety and enable medium-haul aircraft to arrive to the airport at any time, without limiting the maximum take-off weight.
