Built in 1971, the cinema was named after the ship that carried the famous Russian ethnographer Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay on his travels.
In the 2000s, the cinema was revamped several times but eventually closed down.
The historical sign with the cinema’s name was restored and hung on the façade of the 4-storey building with one underground level. To do this, specialists used 3D technology to scan the original sign and recreated it in modern, durable materials.
The architectural concept was developed by Amanda Levete, the British architect behind the refurbishment of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and was adapted by Russian designers.
