Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier

The unique memorial is dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who fell in battles near Rzhev in 1942–1943 during the Great Patriotic War. Following calls from veterans of the War, the monument was built on the fields of fierce fighting, where the Rzhev–Vyazma offensive took place. The monument design was selected through a competition, won by sculptor Andrey Korobtsov and architect Konstantin Fomin. The memorial features a colossal 25-m statue of a Soviet soldier in the centre, a slab with a bronze bas-relief of a five-pointed star in the southern part of the memorial, alleys with granite-clad tiles and metal panels carrying the names of the 62,000 people who fell during the Battle of Rzhev as well as a museum and exhibition pavilion. In the evening, the monument is clearly visible from afar thanks to the landscape lighting.
