In the Sergiyevo-Posadsky District, the remediation project for the Parfyonovo landfill has been completed, part of the Clean Country federal project and the Ecology and Environment of the Moscow Region government programme. All landfills in the Moscow Region have been closed at the request of Andrey Vorobyov, Governor of the Moscow Region.

Opened in 1983, Parfyonovo became one of the largest landfills in the Moscow Region, occupying 16 ha and accumulating over 1 million m3 of waste, according to the Minister of Ecology and Nature Management of the Moscow Region.

MSU-1 GC was engaged to perform the remediation. The project included landscaping the landfill body, fitting a capping cover, building a retaining wall as well as installing landfill gas collection and utilisation systems and a leachate collection and treatment system. The final project stage involved laying a fertile layer of soil on top of the landfill body, planting perennial grasses, and landscaping the site.

In 2023, the administration of the Sergiyevo-Posadsky District will continue revegetation measures and operating the installed equipment. Plans include using the remediated landfill for recreational purposes in the future.

Earlier, Andrey Vorobyov, Governor of the Moscow Region, emphasised that the excessive proliferation of landfills should never happen again.
