Sergei Sobyanin, the Moscow Mayor, visited the construction site of the traffic interchange at the intersection of the Moscow Ring Road with Lipetskaya Street and instructed the contractor to accelerate the project, earlier scheduled for completion next year. The general contractor representative offered assurances that the road construction project would be completed in full by the end of the year.
“I told you that we need to bring forward the completion date for this interchange, because the [traffic] situation is tense here, this is actually one of the most difficult sections of the Moscow Ring Road, and the traffic in Biryulyovo Zapadnoye and Biryulyovo Vostochnoye [Districts] is very heavy. I ask you to speed up [the construction],” said Sobyanin, recommending the contractor pay particular attention to building a crossing over the railroad tracks.
Alexey Kozlov, First Vice President of MSU-1 GC, responded that the traffic interchange project is on schedule; to date, the slip roads on the Moscow Ring Road to and from central Moscow are already open to vehicle traffic. While the commissioning was originally scheduled for April 2024, all road construction work will be completed before the end of this year.
Sobyanin told reporters that active road construction work continues in the capital. “One of the most important [road construction] projects is the traffic interchange of the Moscow Ring Road, Lipetskaya Street, and the M-4 Don Highway. This spot is very important; in fact, a new modern interchange is being built, which will improve the traffic [for residents] in the Biryulyovo Zapadnoye and Biryulyovo Vostochnoye Districts, Leninsky District – we are talking about hundreds of thousands of people. At the same time, the refurbishment project in progress on the Moscow Ring Road will improve the situation on the highway,” he said.
The refurbishment of the Lipetskaya Street traffic interchange is part of the programme to upgrade the Moscow Ring Road, under which 22 interchanges of outbound arterial roads with major city streets are being refurbished or replaced. According to the Moscow Mayor and Government Press Service, construction for the project is now almost 48% complete since the launch in May 2021.
The project involves replacing the obsolete traffic interchange with a modern structure with directional slip roads as well as refurbishing the Moscow Ring Road section between the 26th km and the 31st km, which will connect the future Moscow High-Speed Diameter with Kashirskoye Highway. A total of 18.6 km of roads will be constructed under the project, including eight structures with a total length of over 1 km.
