MSU-1 GC continues refurbishing the runway of the Arkhangelsk airport (Talagi Airport) and upgrading its technical infrastructure. Sergey Rodnev, the Minister of Transport of the Arkhangelsk Region, visited the project site on 7 June to check the progress.
“We continue tracking the project progress against the schedule. As of today, we can see that the concrete casting stage started almost a month ahead of schedule. This means that all works will be completed at least on time, and probably even earlier. We are confident that the work will be of solid quality,” said the minister.
Concrete casting at the runway of the Arkhangelsk airport started ahead of schedule, with the first 500 m out of a total 2500 m already finished. The construction team continues laying the top pavement layer, while the dismantling of old reinforced concrete slabs and asphalt concrete of the runway shoulders has already been successfully completed.
According to Kirill Glagolev, the project director at MSU-1 GC, the project is at its final stage: “We have moved to laying the top concrete layer. In other words, this is the final stage, where we can see both the project progress and the general picture of the final result. I have to say, this new runway pavement is one that all airport builders could be proud of. If it is flat and straight, then our efforts are not in vain, and we are doing it right.”
The new runway will enhance flight safety and enable medium-haul aircraft to arrive to the airport at any time, without limiting the maximum take-off weight.
“In May, we moved on to dismantling works, removing the existing pavement and carrying out the necessary excavation work, and then immediately started to work on the new pavement. The pavement consists of three layers: a crushed stone foundation, a base of rigid concrete, and the topping made of high-quality concrete mix,” Kirill Glagolev added.
The project is ahead of schedule, despite a rainy start to the month. Plans include completing cement concrete work by the end of August and then installing utility networks. Next up will be building wastewater treatment facilities, a patrol road, and an emergency services building.
The final project deadline is as early as 2024. As previously reported, the upgraded airport will be able to receive a wider range of aircraft, increasing the volume of passenger and cargo traffic at the air hub in general.
